Biography
A fine-art photographer and artist of the intimate, Isabelle Chapuis explores what the body tells us when words are no longer enough. Through photography, she seeks to reveal the emotions, fragilities and identities that surface behind the image.
The body as territory
A graduate of ESAG Penninghen in art direction, she made photography her language. Pigments, plants, organic materials, textures and smoke turn the body into a sensitive territory, at once intimate and universal. Her images do more than represent: they question the way we inhabit our bodies and look at ourselves.
Repairing the gaze
Over the course of her career, Isabelle Chapuis has developed an approach she calls therapeutic photography. The image becomes a space of trust in which to confront one’s body, one’s story and the way one is seen. She thus guides women and men towards a more peaceful relationship with their own image, making photography a tool for listening, recognition and, sometimes, rebuilding.
VIVANT: celebrating our differences
For seven years, she photographed women and men and gathered their stories for VIVANT – Le sacre du corps. Through more than 80 photographs and 15 first-hand accounts, she questions scars, difference, imperfection, vulnerability and our relationship with norms. The project becomes a celebration of real bodies and of what makes each life path unique.
Putting sensitivity back at the centre
In a world dominated by speed, performance and control, Isabelle Chapuis defends the place of emotion, intuition, contemplation and presence. Through her talks, she invites people to slow down, to feel more fully and to take a fairer look at themselves, at others and at the living world. More than a transfer of methods, her talks offer above all an experience: changing the way we look in order to change the way we relate.
The body never lies: it tells what words leave unsaid.
