A graduate of École Polytechnique and Télécom Paris, Jean-Marc Jancovici began his career in organisational consulting before specialising in energy strategy and greenhouse-gas emissions reduction.
His work is built on a central conviction: the economy cannot be considered separately from natural resources, available energy and the laws of physics. Through charts, comparisons and orders of magnitude, he makes often complex mechanisms accessible and helps audiences understand the constraints shaping our societies.
At the origin of the Bilan Carbone® methodology
In the early 2000s, Jean-Marc Jancovici worked with ADEME on the development of Bilan Carbone®, which became a reference tool for measuring greenhouse-gas emissions from companies and local authorities.
In 2007, he co-founded Carbone 4, a consultancy specialising in low-carbon strategy and climate-change adaptation. This expertise has led him to work with major companies, public bodies and organisations facing energy and environmental transformations.
President of The Shift Project
Jean-Marc Jancovici is also co-founder and president of The Shift Project, a think tank working to reduce the economy's dependence on fossil fuels.
Through the French Economy Transformation Plan, The Shift Project develops sector-by-sector pathways covering transport, industry, housing, agriculture, employment and energy. The approach seeks to move beyond declarations of intent and build a planned, measurable transition compatible with physical constraints.
A teaching approach that has become a reference
Since 2008, Jean-Marc Jancovici has taught at Mines Paris – PSL. His courses on energy, climate and the limits of economic development are widely available online.
His ability to explain complex scientific subjects without oversimplifying them enables him to engage a broad range of audiences, including executives, engineers, public officials, students, journalists and citizens.
Author of the publishing phenomenon World Without End
Jean-Marc Jancovici has written several books on energy and climate change, including Dormez tranquilles jusqu'en 2100.
He also co-authored the graphic novel World Without End with Christophe Blain, exploring the links between energy, economic development and climate disruption.
Through his books, media appearances and talks, he argues for a transition that is chosen and organised rather than one imposed by crises.
