Biography

An astrophysicist, author and science communicator, Sébastien Carassou tells the story of the Universe with the rigour of a researcher and the talent of a storyteller.

Exploring the Universe

Holding a PhD in astrophysics and specialising in galaxy evolution, Sébastien Carassou conducted his research at the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris. His work there included developing a method combining simulations, astronomical observations and machine learning to better understand how galaxies form and evolve.

Turning science into an adventure

In 2015, he co-founded the YouTube channel Le Sense of Wonder. Videos, books and talks have all become ways of making major scientific discoveries accessible. With clarity, humour and imagination, he turns complex subjects into stories that spark curiosity and wonder.

Travelling from the unknown to the unknown

In 2025, he published Destination Cosmos, an astrotourism guide that invites readers to see the Universe as a genuine travel destination. In 2026, he continued this exploration with cosmologist Jean-Philippe Uzan in L’Univers incompris, devoted to the great enigmas that science cannot yet answer.

What will we leave behind?

Since 2024, Sébastien Carassou has been Scientific Director of Sanctuary on the Moon, a project that aims to place a lasting archive of humanity’s knowledge, testimonies and creations on the Moon. It is a way of connecting science, memory and transmission by asking what our civilisation will choose to pass on to future generations.
