Bilingual French / English engagements

English-speaking and bilingual keynote speakers

Booking an English-speaking keynote speaker for an event in France, Belgium, Luxembourg or Switzerland raises a question no translation budget answers: who handles the Q&A, the panel and the coffee break? Ogma Events is a speaker bureau based in Mersch, Luxembourg, working across French-speaking Europe. We shortlist speakers who genuinely work in both languages, and send three profiles within 48 hours.

A bilingual speaker, or an interpreter?

Simultaneous interpretation solves a language problem and creates an event problem. Booths, headsets, a few seconds of delay and an extra supplier are manageable for a scripted institutional address. They rarely survive a keynote built on timing, humour and improvisation.

The gap shows in the Q&A, and again in everything that follows it — the coffee break, ten minutes with a board member — where there is no interpreter at all. Our rule: put someone on stage who speaks the language of the majority of the room, and keep interpretation for profiles that exist in one language only.

Four ways to run a bilingual conference

The right format follows the make-up of the room, not the country the event is held in.

  • Full keynote in English — a mainly international audience, or a group convention.
  • Talk in French, Q&A in English — the most common case: a French-language seminar with a handful of head-office guests.
  • Deliberate alternation — opening and close in English, body in French, written into the run-of-show.
  • Split delivery and slides — spoken French with English slides, for audiences that read English more comfortably than they listen to it.

Every speaker profile lists the formats on offer — conference, keynote, workshop, panel or moderated interview — and the standards of public speaking apply in both languages.

Checking that the English is real

"Fluent English" covers a wide range: chairing a meeting and carrying a keynote in plenary are not the same skill, and a speaker who is outstanding in French can be laboured in English.

So ask for engagements already delivered in English and for video without subtitles. Our process then includes an initial interview of about half an hour with each of the three shortlisted speakers: hold it in English, with whoever will host the session.

Who books bilingual speakers in French-speaking Europe

Three configurations come back regularly: a group convention that brings several countries together and switches to English for the plenary; a French subsidiary's seminar attended by head-office executives; a European body where English is the working language even though most of the room speaks French.

In Luxembourg and Belgium, English often serves as the shared language between French-, Dutch- and German-speaking colleagues. We have worked with these audiences for more than ten years, across over 1,000 engagements. Leadership, change management and artificial intelligence travel well internationally, provided the examples and references are adapted.

Lead times and budget for an English-language keynote

Of the 116 speaker profiles in our catalogue, not all work in English — and among those who do, not all are free on your date. Filtering by language narrows the pool: in high season, September to October and January to March, allow three to six months.

Fees sit in the same brackets as French-language engagements: €2,000 to €50,000 excluding VAT, most bookings between €5,000 and €15,000. Language is not a line item on the quote; what it changes is how many profiles your budget reaches. Travel weighs more on an international event: the journey and any hotel night are costed in the total estimate sent with each profile. A video-conference session, 30 to 50% cheaper than an on-site talk, suits an audience spread across several countries.

Preparing an engagement in English

Preparation follows the same process as a French-language event: a framing meeting sets the objectives, the key messages and the internal context; a content meeting settles the angle, the structure and the level of technical detail.

Three approvals are specific to bilingual events: the title and synopsis in the language of the session, the slides in the chosen language, and the choreography of the Q&A — who hosts, in which language, and who rephrases if a question arrives in French during an English session. The debrief afterwards confirms the talk delivered on its promise.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an English-speaking keynote speaker cost?

Fees fall in the same brackets as French-language engagements: €2,000 to €50,000 excluding VAT, most bookings between €5,000 and €15,000. Language itself is not charged as a supplement, but it narrows the pool your budget can reach. Travel and expenses are added on top and costed in the total estimate sent with each profile.

How far in advance should we book a bilingual speaker?

Allow three to six months in high season, meaning September to October and January to March. Because filtering by language reduces the number of available speakers, there is less flexibility on dates than for a French-language conference. We send a first shortlist of three profiles within 48 hours.

How can we verify a speaker's English before signing?

Ask for engagements already delivered in English and for video without subtitles. More usefully, use the initial interview of about half an hour we arrange with each of the three shortlisted speakers: hold it in English, with the person who will host the session, and leave room for unscripted questions.

Our audience mixes French and English speakers — which format works?

Three options work well: a French-language talk with the Q&A in English, when international guests are a minority; a fully English keynote, when the plenary brings several countries together; or planned alternation, opening and close in one language, body in the other. Announce the language in the programme.

Can an English-speaking speaker present remotely or travel from abroad?

Yes. A video-conference session costs 30 to 50% less than an on-site engagement and suits audiences spread across several countries, with live questions kept in the running order. For on-site events, speakers based abroad travel to France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland; the journey and any hotel night appear in the total cost estimate.
